Harness Sizing Guide: How to Measure for a Perfect Strap-On Fit
A harness that fits well makes strap-on sex functional and comfortable. One that fits badly — too loose to hold position, too tight to wear for more than a few minutes — makes the whole experience frustrating regardless of how good the dildo is.
This guide covers how to take the measurements that matter, what the numbers mean, and how to match a harness to both your body and your chosen dildo.
The Measurements That Matter
There are three measurements relevant to harness sizing: hip circumference (for the harness body), O-ring inner diameter (for dildo compatibility), and — if considering a thigh harness — thigh circumference. Each is simple to take with a soft measuring tape.
Hip and Waist Measurement
The primary sizing dimension for a standard hip harness is hip circumference, measured around the widest part of the hips — not the waist.
Stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and buttocks, keeping the tape level and snug without pulling tight. Record the measurement in both centimetres and inches, as different brands use different units.
Most adjustable harnesses accommodate a range of roughly 70–125 cm (28"–50"). This covers the majority of body types. Before purchasing, verify that the specific harness you're considering covers your measurement — some budget harnesses have narrower adjustment ranges.
If you fall near the edge of a size range, size up rather than down. A harness that's slightly too big can be tightened; one that's genuinely too small cannot be safely stretched.
O-Ring Sizing: Matching Harness to Dildo
The O-ring is the circular opening in the harness through which the dildo is inserted. Getting this match right is the most technically important part of harness selection.
How to measure the dildo: Hold the dildo upright and measure across the base at its widest point. This is the base diameter. Your O-ring's inner diameter needs to be approximately equal to the dildo's base diameter — close enough that the dildo sits snugly without slipping, but not so tight that removing it requires force.
As a general rule: the O-ring inner diameter should match the shaft diameter of the dildo, not the full flare of the base. The base flare (which is wider) is what stops the dildo falling through. The shaft width determines how snugly the O-ring grips.
Standard O-ring sizes: Most harnesses include multiple interchangeable O-rings, typically in three sizes: 38 mm (1.5"), 44 mm (1.75"), and 51 mm (2"). These cover the most common dildo shaft diameters.
- 38 mm: suits slim to average dildos (roughly 3–3.5 cm shaft diameter)
- 44 mm: suits average to above-average dildos (roughly 3.5–4.5 cm shaft diameter)
- 51 mm: suits larger dildos (roughly 4.5–5 cm shaft diameter)
If you're buying a specific dildo alongside your harness, check its shaft diameter at the base and match to the closest O-ring. If the measurement falls between sizes, go with the smaller ring — a slightly snug fit holds better than a loose one.
Harness Styles and What Fits What
There are several harness styles, each with different fit characteristics.
Underwear Style (Briefs/Boxer Style)
The most beginner-friendly design. Looks like a pair of underwear with a reinforced front panel and an O-ring opening. Adjustable waistband and leg openings allow for a wide range of body shapes.
This style distributes pressure across the hips and waist, stays in place well during movement, and is easy to put on and take off. It is the default recommendation for anyone new to strap-on sex.
Sizing works exactly as above: measure hip circumference and confirm the harness range covers it.
Jockstrap Style (Two-Strap / Minimalist)
Two straps around the waist and two around the thighs, connected at the front by the O-ring panel. More minimalist, allows more freedom of movement, and is easier to take partially off without fully removing.
Sizing involves both hip and thigh measurements. The hip straps should sit comfortably on the hip bones; the thigh straps should grip without cutting in. Both are typically adjustable over a wide range.
Thigh Harness
Worn around the thigh rather than the hips. Allows penetration with a thigh-mounted dildo — useful for positions where a hip harness is impractical, or for people who want a non-hip-mounted option.
Sizing requires measuring thigh circumference at the widest point — typically mid-thigh. Measure with the leg relaxed, not flexed. Most thigh harnesses adjust between roughly 40–75 cm thigh circumference.
Strapless Strap-On (Feeldoe Style)
A different category entirely. Rather than a harness, these designs have an insertable bulb that the wearer holds internally by pelvic floor contraction, with the external shaft used for penetration.
Sizing for strapless designs is less about measurements and more about fit in practice. The bulb needs to be held by the wearer without a harness, which requires a certain amount of internal grip. These require practice to use effectively and are generally not recommended as a first purchase.
Materials and Comfort
The harness material affects both durability and comfort during wear.
Nylon/neoprene: Most common in beginner and mid-range harnesses. Lightweight, easy to clean (rinse with water, air dry), and durable. Can cause minor friction with sensitive skin during extended wear.
Leather: Traditional material. More durable long-term, moulds slightly to the body over time, and some wearers find it more comfortable than nylon. Requires more care (wipe clean, condition occasionally). Not suitable for shared use without thorough cleaning.
Silicone: Used in some premium designs. Fully waterproof, easy to sterilise, and skin-soft. Typically more expensive.
For beginners, nylon or neoprene is the most practical choice.
Putting It Together: A Sizing Checklist
Before purchasing a harness, confirm:
- Your hip circumference falls within the harness's adjustment range
- The included O-rings cover the diameter of your chosen dildo's shaft
- If buying a thigh harness, your thigh circumference falls within the adjustment range
- The dildo base is flared wide enough to catch behind the O-ring (base diameter must be wider than the O-ring diameter)
If you're buying harness and dildo as a set, many products bundle these together with matched O-ring sizing. If buying separately, take both measurements before purchasing either.
Finding the Right Fit at Measured Pleasure
Every harness listed at Measured Pleasure includes the key measurements in the product data: hip adjustment range, included O-ring sizes, and (where relevant) thigh circumference range.
