How to Measure Girth: Circumference to Diameter Conversion
Girth is measured as circumference (around) but toys are usually listed by diameter (width). This guide explains the conversion and measurement.
Circumference vs Diameter: The Difference
Circumference: The distance around (like measuring around a pencil with string). Feels bigger, familiar for body measurement.
Diameter: The width across (like measuring the width of a pencil with a ruler). How toys are usually listed.
Why it matters: If you measure yourself in circumference, you need to convert to diameter to match toy specs.
The Formula
Diameter = Circumference ÷ 3.14159 (π)
Example: If your circumference is 5 inches, diameter is 5 ÷ 3.14159 = 1.59 inches.
How to Measure Your Girth
Option 1: String method (circumference)
- Wrap flexible measuring tape or string around (midway, not tip)
- Note the measurement
- Convert to diameter using formula above
Option 2: Calipers (diameter)
- Use calipers or measuring tool across the widest point
- Direct diameter measurement, no conversion needed
- Most accurate if you have proper tools
Quick Reference Table
| Circumference (cm) | Circumference (in) | Diameter (cm) | Diameter (in) | |---|---|---|---| | 8 | 3.15 | 2.55 | 1.0 | | 10 | 3.94 | 3.18 | 1.25 | | 12 | 4.72 | 3.82 | 1.5 | | 14 | 5.51 | 4.46 | 1.75 |
