How to Use a Fleshlight: A Practical Guide for First-Timers
14 March 2024 · 5 min read
A Fleshlight is straightforward in concept but takes a few sessions to use comfortably and effectively. This guide covers everything you need to know: preparation, lubrication, use, and the cleaning routine that matters most for longevity.
Preparation
Warm the sleeve first. SuperSkin at room temperature feels noticeably different from SuperSkin at body temperature. The simplest warming method is placing the sleeve (removed from the case) in warm water for 5–10 minutes before use. A bowl of warm tap water works fine — the sleeve is waterproof (the material itself, not the case with the charge port). Alternatively, run warm water through the inside of the sleeve.
Don't use hot water — warm is enough, and very hot water can degrade the material over time.
Have water-based lubricant ready. This is not optional. SuperSkin is a soft material that requires lubrication to use comfortably. Silicone-based lubricant damages SuperSkin — use only water-based. The Fleshlight-brand lubricant is fine; any quality water-based personal lubricant works equally well.
Lubrication
Apply lubricant into the sleeve and on yourself. A small amount goes a long way initially; you can add more through the cap end during use if needed.
The sleeve should feel slippery throughout use. If it starts to feel less comfortable or drag-y, pause and add more lubricant. Don't push through discomfort — it's simply a lubrication issue.
Using the Case
The end cap screws on and off. Screwing it tighter creates more suction inside the sleeve during use; looser allows more airflow and less suction. Experiment with this — some people prefer more suction (tighter cap), others prefer less. You can adjust during use.
The sleeve fits inside the case with the entrance facing out of the larger open end. You can hold the case in a hand, wedge it between cushions, or use a mount if you have one.
During Use
There's no single correct technique. The case can be moved rather than held still; you can vary speed, depth, and the tightness of the cap. Most people find the first few uses require some experimentation to find what works best.
If you're using it with a partner: Fleshlights work for partnered use as part of foreplay or when a partner controls the device.
Cleaning — The Most Important Part
This is where most Fleshlight longevity problems originate. The cleaning routine is simple but non-negotiable.
Immediately after use:
- Remove the sleeve from the case
- Rinse thoroughly under warm running water, through both ends
- Do not use soap inside the sleeve — soap residue degrades SuperSkin over time
- Rinse until the water runs clear and there's no residue inside
Drying: This is critical. A damp sleeve stored in a closed container will develop odour and mould.
- Pat the exterior with a lint-free cloth
- Stand the sleeve on end (or hang it) to air dry completely
- Do not store back in the case until fully dry — this takes 30 minutes to a few hours depending on airflow and temperature
- Never use a hair dryer on the sleeve
Maintenance: Once the sleeve is fully dry, it may feel slightly tacky. Fleshlight sells a specific renewal powder; pure cornstarch (not cornflour with added ingredients) is a widely used inexpensive alternative. Dust a small amount over the surface and work it in — this restores the original feel and reduces tackiness.
The case: Clean separately with warm soapy water, rinse and dry fully.
