Sex Swing Setup Guide: Installation for Each Mount Type

This is the companion to the sex swing buying guide (Post 1). That post covers choosing a swing. This post covers installing one correctly.

Door-Mounted Installation (5 Minutes)

Requirements

  • Solid-core door (knock test confirms it's solid, not hollow)
  • Included door bar/bracket

Steps

  1. Unbox the swing
  2. Hang the bar over the top of the door (outside of room works best)
  3. Position the swing directly below
  4. Test with light weight before full use

Safety Check

Hang the bar, then without swinging hard, apply moderate downward pressure. The door frame should barely flex. If it flexes significantly, choose a different door.

Common Mistakes

  • Using hollow-core door (won't work)
  • Not checking door frame before use (might fail under load)
  • Hanging too high (creates awkward angle)

Ceiling-Mounted Installation (30 minutes to 2 hours)

Tools Needed

  • Stud finder (essential)
  • Drill with bits
  • Wrench (usually included in kit)
  • Step ladder
  • Level (optional but helpful)

Steps

  1. Find ceiling joists using stud finder. Mark the joist line.
  2. Locate your installation point on the joist (usually center of room works best).
  3. Drill pilot hole according to hook kit instructions.
  4. Screw in the hook manually, then tighten with wrench.
  5. Attach chain/straps to the hook according to instructions.
  6. Hang the swing from the chain.
  7. Test with dead weight (sandbag, kettlebell) before using with people.

If You Miss the Joist

If your installation point isn't on a joist, use heavy-duty toggle bolts instead of direct screw-in:

  1. Drill hole in drywall
  2. Insert toggle bolt
  3. Tighten toggle (it expands behind drywall)
  4. Hang swing from the bolt

Toggle bolts in drywall work but aren't as secure as joist installation. If possible, find a joist location.

Professional Installation

If you're uncomfortable drilling/installing, hire a handyperson (£50–150). It's worth the cost to ensure safety.

Safety Check

Once installed, hang a sandbag or kettlebell the weight of both people combined, leave it hanging for 30 seconds. Any movement in the ceiling or hook = problem. Reinforcement needed before use.

Stand-Alone Frame Installation (30–60 minutes)

Requirements

  • Level floor (essential)
  • Frame assembly parts
  • Wrench/tools usually included

Steps

  1. Unbox frame
  2. Assemble according to instructions (usually simple bolt-and-nut assembly)
  3. Place on level floor
  4. Check for wobbling (frame should be completely stable)
  5. Attach swing to frame hooks
  6. Test stability before use

Stability Check

With the frame fully assembled and swing attached, apply moderate downward pressure on the empty swing. No wobbling or movement = safe. Any wobbling = frame isn't level or has assembly issues.

Leveling Uneven Floors

If your floor is uneven:

  • Add shim pads under frame legs to level it
  • Or place entire frame on a sheet of plywood
  • Recheck stability after leveling

Pre-Use Safety Checklist

Before every use:

  • [ ] Check all straps/stitching (look for tears or fraying)
  • [ ] Check anchor point (door bar, ceiling hook, frame stability)
  • [ ] Check chain/ropes for rust or damage
  • [ ] Check seat integrity
  • [ ] Confirm weight limits haven't been exceeded
  • [ ] For door swings, confirm door frame isn't excessively stressed

Common Installation Mistakes

Mistake 1: Not checking door solidity (hollow-core door failure) Fix: Knock test on all potential doors first.

Mistake 2: Missing the ceiling joist and using weak anchors Fix: Use stud finder properly, verify joist location, or use toggle bolts.

Mistake 3: Not testing weight before use Fix: Always test with dead weight (sandbag, kettlebell) matching user weight.

Mistake 4: Placing stand-alone frame on uneven floor Fix: Level the floor before assembly, recheck stability.

Mistake 5: Not checking stitching/hardware before use Fix: Visual inspection takes 30 seconds—do it every time.

Post-Installation Use

Once installed:

  1. Test gently with one person (stationary)
  2. Gradually increase motion
  3. Stop immediately if anything creaks, moves, or feels wrong
  4. Re-inspect if anything felt off

Final Safety Note

A properly installed swing is safe. An improperly installed swing can fail dangerously.

If you have doubts, get professional installation. The £100–150 cost is insurance against injury.
