Sex Toys for Older Men: What Works and Why
15 January 2025 · 8 min read
Male sexual response changes with age in predictable ways. Understanding those changes makes it much easier to choose toys and approaches that actually work, rather than products designed for a younger physiology.
How Male Sexual Response Changes with Age
Longer time to erection: The refractory period (time needed between orgasms) lengthens significantly from 20s to 50s and beyond. Erections take more stimulation to achieve and may not be as firm.
Reduced sensitivity: The penis becomes less sensitive to touch over time — partly due to reduced testosterone, partly due to nerve changes. More stimulation is needed to achieve the same arousal level.
Testosterone decline: From around age 30, testosterone declines gradually — typically 1–2% per year. By 60, levels may be 30–40% lower than peak. This affects libido, erection quality, and the intensity of orgasms.
Prostate enlargement (BPH): Most men over 60 have some degree of benign prostatic hyperplasia. This can affect urinary function and sometimes sexual function, but it also means the prostate is more prominent and often more sensitive to stimulation.
Refractory period: Recovery time after orgasm increases substantially. For many men over 60, orgasm once per session is typical.
None of these changes mean sexual pleasure diminishes — they mean the approach needs to adapt.
What Works Well
Vibration — much more effective than friction alone
Because sensitivity decreases with age, friction-based stimulation (standard manual or oral sex) becomes progressively less effective for some men. Vibration bypasses this — it stimulates nerve endings in a fundamentally different way and is less affected by the desensitisation that comes with age.
Wand massagers applied to the penis are the most powerful vibration option. The Hitachi Magic Wand and Doxy produce vibration intense enough to be highly effective even with reduced penile sensitivity.
Penis vibrators like the Hot Octopuss Pulse are specifically designed for this application. The Pulse III was partly developed with the needs of older men and men with ED in mind — it works without requiring erection and without requiring thrusting.
Cock rings for erection support
A cock ring worn at the base of the penis slows blood outflow and helps maintain erection once achieved. For men who achieve erection but have difficulty maintaining it, a soft silicone cock ring can make a meaningful difference without medication. This is not a substitute for medical treatment if ED is significant, but for mild to moderate difficulty it's a useful tool.
Prostate massage
As the prostate grows with age, prostate stimulation often becomes more intense. Many men in their 50s and 60s discover prostate play more rewarding than they would have at 25. A curved prostate massager (Aneros Helix Syn is the most recommended entry-level option; the Lelo Hugo adds vibration) can produce orgasms that are qualitatively different from — and often more intense than — conventional orgasm.
Automatic/hands-free masturbators
Devices like the Kiiroo Keon or Fleshlight Launch do the work mechanically, requiring less physical effort than manual stimulation. For men with arthritis or reduced grip strength, this is a practical consideration. The hands-free aspect also allows focus on sensation rather than mechanics.
What to Consider When Buying
Power: Higher-powered vibration is generally more useful for older men. Don't buy the cheapest option if vibration is the primary reason for purchase.
Ease of use: Single-button operation, simple controls, and easy cleaning are more important at this stage of life than multiple modes and features.
Waterproofing: Easier cleaning. IPX7 (fully submersible) is worth specifying.
Comfort: Softer silicone, flexible designs, and ergonomic shapes matter more as anatomy and flexibility change.
Prostate Health and Stimulation
There's growing evidence that regular ejaculation is associated with reduced prostate cancer risk — studies have found men who ejaculate more frequently have lower rates of prostate cancer. This isn't conclusive causation, but regular sexual activity in older men has no known downsides and potential health benefits.
Prostate massage is a separate practice from ejaculation. A prostate massager can be used for pleasure and the sensation of direct prostate contact, which many men find distinct from orgasm and worthwhile in its own right.
A Note on Erectile Dysfunction
Mild erectile difficulties can often be addressed with cock rings, penis pumps, or vibrating penis toys that work without requiring full erection. Significant or sudden onset ED warrants a conversation with a GP — it can be a marker of cardiovascular issues that deserve attention independent of sexual function.
