How to Care for Silicone Sex Toys: Cleaning, Storage, and Longevity

Silicone sex toys are among the most durable and body-safe products available, but they have specific care requirements that determine how long they last and whether they remain safe to use. This guide covers everything that matters.

Cleaning After Every Use

Clean silicone toys after every use without exception. Even if the toy was used only externally, cleaning before storage prevents bacterial growth.

Warm water and mild soap — the standard method. Run warm water over the toy, apply a small amount of unscented liquid soap (dish soap or a gentle body wash), lather, rinse thoroughly, and pat dry with a clean cloth. This removes surface bacteria and organic material effectively for most uses.

Toy cleaner spray — purpose-made antibacterial sprays are convenient, particularly for toys that can't be submerged (motorised toys with imperfect waterproofing). Spray, leave for 30–60 seconds, wipe with a clean cloth. Don't replace soap-and-water cleaning with spray-only for insertable toys.

Boiling (for non-motorised toys) — the most thorough cleaning method for solid silicone. Place in boiling water for 3–5 minutes. This sterilises the surface of non-porous silicone effectively. Only for toys without electronics — motors, batteries, and charging ports cannot be boiled.

Dishwasher (for non-motorised toys) — a top-rack run with no detergent (the hot water cycle is sufficient) sterilises solid silicone toys thoroughly. Again, electronics make this impossible.

What Damages Silicone

Silicone-based lubricant — the most common cause of silicone toy damage. Silicone lube bonds with silicone surfaces, causing a sticky, tacky degradation of the surface that cannot be reversed. Use only water-based lubricant with silicone toys. Always.

Oil-based products (including massage oils) — silicone toys absorb some oils over time, which can affect the surface texture. Avoid prolonged contact with oil-based substances.

Silicone-to-silicone contact in storage — two silicone toys stored in direct contact can bond or degrade each other's surfaces over time, particularly if either has any residual moisture or if the silicone formulations are slightly different. Store silicone toys separately.

Strong cleaning agents — bleach, alcohol, and acetone can damage silicone surfaces or degrade the material over repeated use. Stick to mild soap or purpose-made toy cleaners.

UV light — prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or UV can cause some silicone formulations to yellow or become brittle over time. Store away from direct light.

Abrasive cloths or brushes — silicone surfaces scratch more easily than you might expect. Use a soft cloth only.

Storage

Individual storage bags — the simplest approach. A clean, breathable fabric pouch or a clean zip-lock bag for each toy keeps them from contacting other silicone and from collecting dust.

Dedicated toy boxes — many manufacturers include a storage pouch or box. If yours didn't, any clean container with a lid works.

Avoid rubber or latex contact — as with silicone, rubber and latex can react with silicone over time. Store toys made from different materials separately.

Cool, dry, out of direct light — no special conditions needed beyond these basics.

Signs of Silicone Degradation

Silicone in good condition feels slightly firm, has a gentle matte sheen, and is smooth. Warning signs:

• Tackiness or stickiness that doesn't wash off — often silicone lube damage
• Surface crumbling or flaking — age or inappropriate cleaning
• Strong or unusual chemical smell — may indicate contamination or poor-quality silicone

If a toy shows signs of degradation, it's time to replace it.
