Strap-On Dildo Size Guide: Choosing the Right Dimensions for Your Harness

Choosing a dildo for strap-on use is genuinely different from choosing one for solo use. Without direct sensation feedback, the size that works best for the receiving partner needs to be selected more carefully. And the compatibility with a harness introduces an entirely separate set of considerations. Here's what to evaluate.
Why Strap-On Size Selection Is Different
When using a dildo solo, you can feel exactly what's happening and adjust in real time. With a strap-on, the person wearing the harness has limited or no direct sensation from the dildo itself — they're working from their partner's feedback rather than their own.
This means the size needs to be right for the receiving partner before you start, rather than something you learn by feel. Overestimating causes discomfort; underestimating is a minor problem (you can adjust later). The better starting strategy is to choose conservatively and increase if the partner wants more.
Flared Base: The Non-Negotiable
The first requirement for any dildo used in a harness is a flared base. The harness's O-ring holds the dildo in position via the base — without a flared base, the dildo won't stay in the harness. For anal use, the flared base also prevents the toy from being drawn entirely inside the body.
The flare needs to be pronounced enough to catch on the O-ring: a subtle curve at the base isn't sufficient. A distinct, broad flange or wide flat base is what you need.
O-Ring Sizing
Standard harnesses have a fixed or interchangeable O-ring (the opening through which the dildo base passes). Most O-rings are 38–45mm (approximately 1.5") in internal diameter. The dildo's base needs to be wider than this to catch on the ring; the dildo's shaft needs to fit through the ring comfortably.
If you're buying a dildo specifically for an existing harness, check the O-ring size of the harness and confirm the dildo's shaft diameter at the base is smaller than the ring opening, with the base wider than the ring.

Insertable Length
For strap-on use, the insertable length that matters is the length from the O-ring attachment point to the tip — because the harness itself takes up some of the base, the effective insertable length is often shorter than the labelled insertable length.
If a dildo has 15cm of insertable length but 3cm of that is concealed behind the O-ring during harness use, the effective length is approximately 12cm. This varies by harness design. Check measurements from reviews or manufacturer notes when precision matters.
Diameter
Start with a diameter the receiving partner is familiar with from previous experience. The recommended starting point for penetrative anal harness use is 3–3.5cm diameter; for vaginal, 3–4cm diameter is typical.
Firmness affects the experience at equivalent diameters: a firmer silicone dildo feels more substantial than a softer one of the same diameter. For strap-on use, medium firmness is generally recommended — firm enough to maintain control and direction during use, soft enough to be forgiving.
Rigid vs Flexible
A dildo needs enough rigidity to be steerable during strap-on use. Very soft, flexible dildos can buckle during thrusting when the wearer can't feel what's happening. Medium firmness silicone handles best for harness use.
For anal strap-on use in particular, some rigidity and a moderate upward curve can help with prostate targeting.
Recommended Starting Points
For vaginal pegging/strap-on use: 12–15cm insertable length (accounting for harness), 3–3.5cm diameter, medium-firm silicone, broad flared base.
For anal strap-on use: 12–14cm insertable length, 3–3.5cm diameter, modest upward curve if prostate targeting, firm silicone.
