Best Dildos for Pegging: What to Look For in a Harness-Compatible Toy
24 January 2025 · 5 min read
Choosing a dildo for pegging involves specific considerations beyond standard dildo selection. The giving partner has no direct sensation from the toy, which changes what dimensions are appropriate. The receiving partner is primarily experiencing anal stimulation, which has its own requirements. And the toy must work in a harness, which adds compatibility constraints. Here's how to navigate all of this.
Flared Base: Non-Negotiable
For anal use, any toy must have a flared base to prevent full insertion. For harness use, the flared base must also be wide enough to catch on the O-ring but have a shaft slim enough to pass through it. These requirements are the same: a pronounced, broad flange that extends significantly beyond the shaft diameter.
Not all dildos described as "harness-compatible" are designed specifically for anal use. Confirm both properties: flared base for anal safety AND O-ring size compatibility for harness use.
O-Ring Sizing
Most harnesses have interchangeable O-rings in sizes typically ranging from 38mm to 55mm internal diameter. The most common standard size is 45mm (approximately 1.75"). The dildo shaft must pass through this ring; the dildo's flange must be wider than the ring to catch it.
If you already have a harness, measure the O-ring and match a dildo accordingly. If you're buying a harness and dildo together, many retailers sell compatible sets.
Dimensions for Pegging
Insertable length: Shorter than you might expect. During pegging, the giving partner controls depth by their body position, but overlong toys are harder to control and can be pushed uncomfortably deep involuntarily. 12–15cm effective insertable length (accounting for the portion behind the O-ring) is a practical starting point.
Diameter: For anal pegging, the receiving partner's experience with anal play determines the right starting diameter. For someone new to anal penetration, 2.5–3cm diameter; for those with more experience, 3–4cm is manageable. Pegging almost always works better for the receiving partner if they're familiar with anal toys before introducing a strap-on.
Girth consistency: A dildo that's narrower at the tip and widens significantly at the base is harder to control for depth during pegging. A more consistent diameter along the shaft gives more predictable sensation.
Firmness for Pegging
Medium firmness is generally recommended for pegging. Firm enough that thrust transfers directly without the shaft buckling (important when the giving partner can't feel what's happening); flexible enough to be comfortable for the receiving partner during anal use.
Very firm toys at moderate diameters are fine for experienced receiving partners but can feel less forgiving for beginners.
Curve for Prostate Targeting
A modest upward curve (toward the belly of the receiving partner when they're on their back) can help with prostate contact during pegging. This requires intentional positioning — the giving partner needs to angle downward to direct the curved tip toward the anterior wall of the rectum.
Not all receiving partners want prostate targeting; some prefer a straighter toy for more consistent sensation.
Material
Platinum silicone — the same as any anal toy. Non-porous, cleanable, available in the right firmness range. Some specialist pegging dildos (New York Toy Collective, Tantus) are made specifically for harness use and offer the right combination of base design, shaft consistency, and firmness.
