How to Size Up Safely: A Progressive Guide to Larger Toys

Sizing up — moving to larger toys over time — is something many people do naturally as their experience and preferences develop. Done thoughtfully, it's completely safe. Done impatiently, it leads to discomfort that can put people off the category entirely. Here's how to approach it well.

Why Progressive Sizing Matters

The relevant anatomy — whether vaginal or anal — responds to gentle, progressive experience by becoming more relaxed and comfortable with gradually larger dimensions. This is not permanent dilation or damage; it's the body becoming familiar with a sensation.

Skipping ahead too quickly means asking the body to accommodate something before it's relaxed enough to do so comfortably. The tissue isn't injured (in most cases), but the experience is uncomfortable, which creates an association that makes the next attempt harder.

Small, incremental steps work much better than significant jumps.

For Vaginal Sizing Up

The vaginal canal is elastic and typically the limiting factor is comfort at the entrance, where the introitus (vaginal opening) experiences the most stretch from girth. Length is less likely to cause discomfort than girth, provided you're not forcing against the cervix.

For Anal Sizing Up

The anal sphincter (and the internal sphincter, slightly further in) responds to gradual relaxation. This takes longer than vaginal sizing up — both because the sphincters require more consistent relaxation and because the stakes of forcing are higher (the tissue is less elastic and more vulnerable to irritation).

The approach: Incremental girth increases of 0.2–0.3cm diameter at a time. This is slower than vaginal progression, by design. Stay at each size until insertion is comfortable without significant effort.

Lube is more critical anally — unlike the vaginal canal, the anal canal has no natural lubrication. Generous water-based lubricant is required every time.

Time matters more — don't hurry. At each new size, allow several sessions before moving on. If a size feels challenging on one session, that's normal — don't interpret it as a signal to force through.

Signals to Stop

• Any sharp or intense pain: stop immediately
• Discomfort that doesn't ease within a minute or two: stop and take a break
• Bleeding: stop and assess — minor friction-caused irritation is one possibility but medical evaluation may be appropriate
• Difficulty removing the toy: stop thrusting and focus on relaxation before removal

How Long Does It Take?
