Knotted Dildos: What the Knot Does and How to Size It

Knotted dildos — most commonly associated with canine-style fantasy toy designs — are one of the more distinctive products in the fantasy toy category. The knot is a specific feature with a specific purpose, and sizing it correctly is more important than almost any other spec decision in this category.
What the Knot Is
In canine anatomy, the bulbus glandis is an erectile structure near the base of the penis that swells during mating, creating a physical lock. Canine-style fantasy dildos replicate this as a knot — a pronounced, rounded bulge positioned near the base of the shaft, significantly wider in diameter than the shaft itself.
In use, the knot represents the widest point of the toy. Achieving full insertion (taking the knot inside the body) requires the body to stretch past the widest diameter of the knot, after which the shaft narrows again. This creates a distinct sensation and a degree of "locking in" that differs from standard dildo use.
Why Knot Sizing Is Critical
The knot can be significantly larger than the main shaft — this is the most important thing to understand about knotted designs. A toy with a 4cm diameter shaft might have a 6cm+ diameter knot. These are different sizing considerations.
Many people choose a knotted toy based on the shaft diameter and are surprised by the knot. The knot's widest diameter is the constraining spec — this is what determines whether full insertion (taking the knot) is achievable for your current level of experience.
Always check the knot diameter separately from the shaft diameter when evaluating a knotted toy. Most quality manufacturers publish this figure. If it's not listed, look for user reviews that specifically mention the knot size.
How to Know If You're Ready for a Specific Knot
The knot diameter should be compared to the largest diameter you're currently comfortable with from other toys. If the knot is 5cm in diameter and the largest toy you've used comfortably is 3.5cm diameter, the knot is not currently accessible — you'd need to size up gradually with other toys first.
A sensible approach: the knot diameter should be no more than 0.5–1cm larger than the largest size you're currently comfortable with, for a first knotted toy.
It's worth noting that the knot doesn't need to be taken for the toy to be enjoyable. Many people use knotted toys without achieving full insertion of the knot — the shaft provides its own experience, and the knot adds a point of resistance that many find pleasurable to approach even without fully crossing.
Progressive Approach
Using knotted toys doesn't require rushing to take the knot. Start with the shaft insertion; use the knot as a point of external pressure against the body rather than a goal to push past. Progressing to full knot insertion (if that's your goal) should be done over multiple sessions with gradual, patient preparation.
More lube than usual is particularly important around the knot — the significant diameter increase requires the body to stretch suddenly, and adequate lubrication makes this dramatically more comfortable.
Material and Firmness for Knotted Toys
Soft or medium-soft silicone is the most practical choice for knotted toys, particularly for the knot itself. A firm knot of significant diameter requires more force to take past the widest point; a soft knot compresses slightly, making the stretch more gradual and manageable.
