How to Use a Butt Plug: A Complete First-Timer's Guide

5 July 2024 · 9 min read

Most guides about butt plugs cover which one to buy. This one covers what to do after you've bought it. The two things are related but not the same — a good buying decision does not automatically produce a good first experience if you have no framework for how to use the product.

This guide is for people who have a plug (or are about to) and want a realistic, practical walkthrough of how to use it safely and comfortably.

Before You Start: The Right Conditions

The single biggest factor in whether your first experience is good or uncomfortable is not the plug — it is preparation. Most bad first experiences trace back to one of three causes: insufficient lube, insufficient time, or insufficient relaxation. All are fixable.

Timing matters. Do not attempt anal play when you are stressed, pressed for time, or physically tense. The anal sphincter is an involuntary muscle — it does not respond to willpower the way you might expect. If you are anxious or rushed, the muscle will not relax regardless of how much you want it to. Choose a time when you have privacy, no schedule pressure, and at least 30 minutes of uninterrupted time.

Cleanliness. A shower beforehand removes surface-level concerns for most people. Whether to do any internal cleaning (douching) is a personal choice — for most light plug use, a bowel movement an hour or two prior and a shower is more than adequate. Internal cleaning is optional, not required.

Start with external stimulation first. Before any insertion attempt, spend five to ten minutes with external stimulation — massage around the opening, not inside it. This increases blood flow and helps the sphincter begin to relax naturally. Skipping this step and going straight to insertion is the most common beginner mistake.

Lube: More Than You Think You Need

The anal canal does not self-lubricate. This is the key anatomical fact that makes lube non-optional rather than advisory.

Use a thick, water-based lube. Silicone-based lube lasts longer and is excellent for anal use, but only if your plug is made from glass, stainless steel, or another non-silicone material — silicone lube degrades silicone toy surfaces irreversibly. If your plug is silicone (most are), use water-based.

Apply lube in two places: generously on the plug itself, and a small amount around the external opening. If you can apply a little internally with a finger or applicator, even better.

The amount that feels like too much is usually about right. A very common experience on first use is to apply what seems like a reasonable amount of lube, feel some resistance, and realise more would have helped. Err heavily toward more.

Reapplication: water-based lube dries out over time. If you plan to wear the plug for more than 15–20 minutes, have more lube accessible. Adding a small amount of water (from damp fingers) to dried lube can briefly reactivate it before adding a fresh application.

Insertion

Once you are relaxed and lubed, approach insertion slowly. The plug does not go in with a push — it is eased in.

Position. For a first attempt, lying on your side with your knees pulled slightly toward your chest is usually the most comfortable starting position. It allows the body to be fully relaxed without any muscle tension from supporting your weight. On all fours also works well. Standing or sitting adds tension; avoid it for a first attempt.

The process. Press the tip of the plug very gently against the opening and apply light, steady pressure. Do not push. As the sphincter begins to allow entry, you will feel it start to open around the tip — let this happen at its own pace rather than forcing it. Most of the plug will feel like gentle pressure. The widest point will require the muscle to expand — again, let this happen slowly rather than pushing through it. Once the widest point passes, the plug will seat naturally as the muscle closes around the narrower neck.

If it hurts, stop. Discomfort — a sensation of fullness, unusual pressure — is normal. Pain is not. Pain means one of three things: you need more lube, you need more relaxation time, or the plug is too large. Do not continue if you feel sharp pain or burning. Remove the plug slowly and reassess.

First-timer note on the 'pop' sensation. When the widest point passes, there is often a noticeable sensation of the plug seating into place — some describe it as a 'pop', others as a release of tension. This is normal and not a cause for concern.

Wearing the Plug

Once inserted, the plug should feel comfortable. A secure, full feeling is normal. If it feels uncomfortable immediately, something needs adjustment — more lube, a smaller plug, or more relaxation time.

Wear time. For a first use, 10–20 minutes is a reasonable duration. Extended wear (1–2+ hours) is fine once you are comfortable with the product, but starting shorter lets you assess how the toy feels without committing to a long session. The most important variable is comfort — if it starts to feel uncomfortable, remove it. Do not push through discomfort.

Movement. Most plugs are designed for stationary wear — standing, lying, or light movement. Vigorous activity (exercising, walking a long distance) is possible but changes how the plug feels. Start stationary to understand the sensation before adding movement.

Lube maintenance. As mentioned: water-based lube dries. If you are wearing the plug for an extended session, you will likely need to remove it briefly, reapply lube, and reinsert. This becomes quick once you are comfortable with the process.

Removal

Removal is straightforward but benefits from the same mindfulness as insertion.

Relax. Bear down slightly as if you are going to the bathroom — this relaxes the sphincter and makes removal effortless. Grip the base of the plug and pull slowly and steadily. The widest point will produce the same sensation as during insertion. If you are fully relaxed, removal takes seconds. If you have tensed up (which happens if you are rushing, anxious, or the session has gone long), take a moment to breathe and bear down more before pulling.

Never leave a plug without a flared base inserted. The flared base is the physical mechanism that prevents insertion going further than intended. A plug without a proper base can be drawn fully inside the body by the sphincter, which requires medical assistance to reverse.

Cleaning After Use

Clean immediately after removal, before the plug dries.

Silicone plugs can be washed with warm water and mild soap. If the plug is non-porous (silicone, glass, or stainless steel) and unshared, soap and water is adequate for personal use. For full sterilisation — necessary if sharing, or periodically as hygiene practice — silicone plugs can be boiled for 3 minutes or run through the dishwasher (top rack, no detergent).

Glass and stainless steel can be sterilised the same way.

Let the plug air dry fully before storing. Storing a damp plug in a sealed bag or case promotes bacterial growth. Store in a breathable pouch or individual case.

What to Expect After Your First Time

First experiences with butt plugs vary more than most guides acknowledge. Some people find it immediately comfortable and enjoyable. Others find it awkward, uncomfortable, or underwhelming. Both responses are normal.

The most common reasons a first attempt is less satisfying than expected: wrong timing (rushed), insufficient lube, insufficient warm-up time, and choosing a plug that was too large. None of these are permanent problems — all of them are solved on the second attempt by adjusting those variables.

The physical sensation changes as you become more familiar with the product. Initial unfamiliarity means part of the experience is just your nervous system processing something new. A second or third experience is usually more enjoyable than the first.
